Remembering Steve Ferguson

R.I.P. – 2026

    Apart from the album, Mr. Ferguson notches just under three dozen music-business credits at Discogs. For example, in 1968 he wrote a song, “Everything Will Be Alright,” nicely recorded as a two-part (instrumental and vocal) garagey pop-rock single by a group called the Odyssey. In the late ’70s, his debut album’s opening cut, “Mama,” was covered by a few people. Among them was Mary MacGregor, who made it the opening track on the 1976 album Torn Between Two Lovers, which ended with the title song, her huge pop hit. Andrew Gold made Ferguson’s delicious, power-poppish “Hope You Feel Good” (not on Steve Ferguson) the opening track on his biggest achievement, 1976’s What’s Wrong with This Picture? Jane Olivor, Jennifer Warnes, and the Carpenters all recorded the big-hearted love song “You’re the One” (also not on Steve Ferguson), though the Carpenters’ typically stunning version was released only after Karen’s death. Clearly, Ferguson’s songs were shopped around. In addition, he played piano and electric piano on albums by Rod Taylor, Wendy Waldman, and Poco.
